Reading Buddy and Class Support Programmes - Posted 10/05/2012
Semester 1 has certainly got away from us and no doubt you’re all in a sea of various assessments. That’s why Golden Key has rescheduled the community service event to be held in weeks 1-3 of semester 2. If you are an education student (primary or secondary), then this is an excellent opportunity to not only help out some disadvantaged schools and students, but also to further your experience in the teaching environment.
There are two options available for Golden Key members to get involved with. First, there is the Reading Buddy Programme at Inala State Primary School, where each volunteer will be partnered up with 2-3 kids to assist with reading books. The second option is an in-class support programme at Yeronga State High School, where each volunteer will play an assistive role to the class teacher by providing individual help to students as their questions arise.
All the details are available on our community service events page.
The Student Services and Amenity Fee, have your say! - Posted 08/04/2012
Last year, the Federal Government amended higher education legislation to allow universities to introduce a new student fee, the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). The fee must be spent by universities on new, non-academic student services and amenities or on improving access to existing services and amenities.
QUT will introduce the fee in the second half of 2012. It will be collected from domestic undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students. For 2012/2013, higher degree research students and corporate award and non award students will be exempt from fee payment due to administrative complexities in charging the fee. The fee will not be collected from international students as their fee already includes a component for the provision of services.
The fee for the second half of this year will be $131 for a full-time student, less for students studying on a part-time basis. Eligible students will be able to defer the payment of the fee through a HELP loan scheme similar to HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP. QUT is consulting with students, including elected Student Guild representatives, on spending priorities. Further information, including proposed spending priorities, will be available over the coming months.
Some senior executives of the University will be in attendance to hear the views of the Forum.
Further information on the fee is available on the Federal Government’s website at Student Services and Amenity Fee.
The Student Forum will be held on:
- Date: Tuesday 17 April 2012
- Time: 9.30am to 11am
- Venue: Gardens Theatre Foyer
- RSVP by: Mid-day, Friday 13th April 2012. You must advise your attendance by completing this webform.

Study Mate and Homework Club - Posted 18/03/2012
Note: The scheduled Study Mate and Homework club sessions have been postponed until second semester.
As part of Golden Key's community service work in 2012, we’ll be supporting the Yeronga State High School Tutoring and Homework Club Program. Yeronga State High School has the largest number of refugees than any other school in Queensland.
Many students are in their second phase of acquiring English language skills having received intensive support at Milpara (an English language preparation centre) on arrival. Nearly all have had disrupted or very little schooling because they come from war-torn countries and often still suffering trauma.
This is a really worthy cause to help out those in need of support who have a need, and a great opportunity to include community service and volunteering on your resume. President's Welcome - Posted 06/03/12
Welcome to QUT Golden Key for 2012. My name is Lauren Crome and I am this year's 2012 President for the QUT Chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society- quite a mouthful! I hope that you all had a wonderful break and are feeling rejuvenated, relaxed and ready to launch into another year of University at QUT. This year is shaping up to be an exciting one for the QUT Golden Key Chapter with many social, professional development and community service events planned to ensure you get the most out of your Golden Key membership.
The Golden Key Executive Committee would like to see a greater awareness, amongst QUT students, of Golden Key in 2012. We are committed to strengthening the Chapter's relationships with other Golden Key Chapters, and to this end, one of our goals for 2012 will be the creation of a QLD alliance for Golden Key. The purpose of the alliance is to build larger networks for all members with a future vision of holding a joint QLD New Member reception as well as combined alumni networking and end of year social events. Currently, we are working with the other Queensland Chapter’s and their presidents to achieve this goal.
For more information about our upcoming events make sure you continue to check your emails or add QUT Golden Key to your Facebook account. You can also keep up to date by following us on Twitter and at http://qutgoldenkey.org/web/.
I look forward to meeting you all at some of our events throughout the year.
