Vacation Research Experience Scholarships - QUT Faculty of Science and Technology (October 2010)
- The 2010/2011 round is now closed. If you missed out this year, make sure you apply next year.
The 2010/2011 round for the vacation research experience scholarships (VRES) administered by the Faculty of Science and Technology is now open. Check your email's as the project list and application forms have already been sent out to students.
The round is set to close on the 15th of October 2010. A number of these scholarships are given annually to 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students only from the Faculty of Science and Technology, to be run over the summer vacation period. VRES recipients normally participate in a project related to a researcher’s ongoing research program. The duration is six to eight weeks, depending on the research project. Scholarships will commence from mid November/early December and will normally conclude by mid-February.
However make sure you are prepared well ahead of time. Use the mid-semester break wisely because you will need to have two academic referees who are comfortable with providing a written reference on your behalf, BEFORE lodging your application (QUT lecturers, for example). If required, your referees will be contacted and requested to provide a written reference, usually via email. You will also need to provide a "supporting statement" that outlines your previous work experience (there will be a space on the application form to do this).
This is the perfect opportunity to put the practical and theory towards a real world problem, get some experience and something special to put on your resume.
Visit the Faculty of Science and Technology's VRES webpage for more information regarding eligibility and the application process.
If you are not a student with the Faculty of Science and Technology make sure to check with your faculty to see if they have a VRES programme of their own. For example the Faculty of Health run a VRES program too but their applications close in early September 2010.
