Wine and Cheese Appreciation Night - 23rd April, 2012
Our annual Corporate networking evening, the “QUT Golden Key Wine and Cheese Appreciation Night” was held on Monday 23rd April at the IBHI Building, Musk Avenue, QUT Kelvin Grove campus. The invitation was extended to QUT GK members, students from various disciplines and QUT student bodies, with approximately 90 people in attendance.
Mr Tom Potter, the founder of the Australian owned Eagle Boys pizza chain, was our special guest speaker on the night. Tom spoke of his passion for working in the food business, loving food just like his father and grandfather. He was a very entertaining speaker, peppering his speech with funny stories here and there as well as the people he has met along the way, but also speaking seriously of the challenges associated with the food industry and business in general.
Tom covered a wide range of topics including business models, market dynamics and research, the importance of organisational culture, brand positioning, competitive advantage, customer service and relations and one’s own business acumen/skills. He also spoke of his current plans in the food industry, as well as business expansion, including successes in New Zealand.
Some of the many memorable tips Tom gave was the need to change with the times and getting comfortable with making changes to your thinking, as well as the need to think like your customers and to go out onto the front lines in order to see what’s happening.
Tom brought along books for autographing, one of which was given away to a lucky member of the audience, and guests had a chance to ask some very interesting questions including how the origin of the Eagle Boys business name came about. Guests were then able to mingle, to the melodies of a live jazz band, with their specially matched industry/study discipline colours to correspondingly-coloured industry professionals to make networking that much easier!
Everyone had the chance to learn from each others’ perspectives, build valuable networks and mingle in a classy venue whilst sampling the carefully matched wine and delectable cheeses.
On behalf of the QUT chapter of Golden Key, we would like to thank everyone who attended for making the night a success.
We would love to hear your feedback from the night and to find out more about the types of corporate events that you would like us to hold. Please feel free to email your feedback to Corporate Relations.

The QUT chapter of Golden Key provided another successful briefing session for budding networkers on Monday 16th of April 2012, from 6pm onwards in the OJW room, S block, QUT Gardens Point campus.
The chapter’s companion event to the annual Corporate Wine and Cheese Appreciation Night, the Networking Skills Seminar is very timely and useful session for those students wishing to brush up on their networking skills, especially how to approach industry professionals and keep a conversation going.
Facilitated by Alison Thomson and Nikki Penhaligon from QUT Careers and Employment, the session covered a range of topics including:
- Your own 15 second commercial
- Self-marketing and branding yourself
- Voice modulation and conversation topics
- Entering and exiting networking situations
- Eating and drinking in networking situations
- Personal presentation for professional situations
- Body language
- Using social networking media
- Pre-preparation and peak performance (achieving your best) in a networking event!
Attendees were guided through numerous practical exercises to try out their networking skills such as trying out their conversation skills and entering/exiting group situations.
As the session drew to a close, some very interesting questions were answered during the Q&A section. After the session attendees enjoyed some light refreshments and took the opportunity to test out their networking skills!
Feedback from the session was very positive and we thank everyone for their attendance and engagement throughout the event. If you missed the session, or are interested in a couple of networking tips, here are the presentation (5.5mb) and dining etiquette (0.5mb) guides.
